Color, more than anything else in painting, is fraught with complexities. The exact nature of color and light is still a mystery. Knowledge of colors is a starting point. Knowing the primaries and secondaries; being familiar with value and intensity; and, composing with color, are the foundations of any well-crafted painting. Additionally, color in relation to Gestalt principles of design will be discussed. Join me, David Curtis, and my friend and fellow painter, Lorwen 'Connie' Nagle, Ph.D., as we explore the fascinating world of color. This course includes Plein air on-site painting homework!

Alexander Cozens’s book on landscape painting gives us a new/old method with which to work. He originally developed the idea as a teaching aid, to liberate the imagination of the student who, he felt, spent too much time copying. Giovanni Boldini was known for the visual movement he worked into his paintings. We will also look at the Boston School technique of ‘pulling it out of the fog,’ which helps develop the painting on a more even basis of establishing edges in relation to the whole.

We’ve all heard a good painting has “variety in unity.” But how do we achieve this? And what exactly does it mean? We will explore this feature of painting in depth in this class. This is about setting up to paint outdoors and not using guides, viewfinders, and other structural means to capture your scene. The principles of gestalt, the Cozens’ blot method, and other nonlinear ways are introduced to help you “feel” your way to a unified and whole painting.
