Paintings and Plein Air Art Instruction

(posted on 13 Apr 2019)

Plein Air Saturday continues ...

Meet at the Allyn Cox Reservation, Essex County Greenbelt Headquarters, 82 Eastern Avenue, Essex. Hours: 10am-4pm. Weather permitting!

Tuition: $20.00 drop in class. No sign up necessary.

The Cox Reservation consists of 26 acres of upland, salt marsh, farmland with house and barn, and river frontage on Eastern Avenue. The views from the larger parcel east toward the salt marsh, the Essex River, the back of Crane Beach, and Castle Hill and Choate Island are magnificent.

Join David P. Curtis and Lorwen C. Nagle as they instruct students in finding and executing a good design; the foundation of any successful painting. Of all the principles of painting, design is the one that should inspire us to create the best composition we can, whether pictorial or otherwise. David and Lorwen will help students find their Line of Design in order to refine their work and execute a finished canvas. If the artist defines the line of design, or pictorial quality,  initially the composition will achieve the proper 'variety within unity.' Without this vital element, a painting may never succeed in manifesting an aspect of beauty that exudes refinement. Students will work on small sketches before moving on to a more complete landscape. Additionally, this workshop addresses memory painting - a vital component of plein air painting and an aspect of landscape painting that is rarely taught! Remember the Whole is Greater than the Sum of its Parts.

A Cape Ann Summer Workshop for students of all levels wishing to take their skills in outdoor oil painting to the next level. This is one of the most popular themes in the workshop program. David P. Curtis will instruct students at 3 different locations throughout Cape Ann over the 3 day workshop. This program is designed to improve drawing skills, as well as promote an understanding of perspective, in addition to the immediacy of composing and designing on the spot. Class work will emphasize observation and composition of the outdoor sketch utilizing color, tone and design. A set of my revised Field Notes is included in the tuition.

Early sign up is recommended as this workshop fills quickly.

Join us for five locations selected for you to enjoy and paint the Maine coast at its best. (Please sign up direct at https://cmaworkshops.com/next-season/) “David P. Curtis, a much-loved Cape Ann instructor , graciously agreed to cover a class in 2015 when the scheduled instructor could not come at the last minute, and blew everybody out of the water! The students, good painters with lots of workshop experience, were unanimous in their praise, saying it was absolutely the best class they had ever taken. I hear this all the time from students who have taken a class with David, wherever he has taught!” ~ Lyn Donovan

Join David P. Curtis and Lorwen C. Nagle as they instruct students in learning to create form through the use of color. Outdoor painting requires a keen eye and steady hand to turn form correctly. Progress your skills by learning from two seasoned artist/instructors in this comprehensive 3-day workshop.
